ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The department of History forms an integral part of the social sciences stream of the College. The department of history bears oldest traditions of higher education in the state of Kerala. It was started in 1956 as a UG programme with an enrolment of 6 students under the guidance of Rev. Mother Fernanda, the first Principal and HOD of History. Now there are 210 students for the course. It has had on its faculty veteran professors, some of whom who had excelled as efficient principals.
Besides Rev. Mother Fernanda, other members of the faculty were Sr. Zinha, Prof. Eunice George, Prof. Rosamma Joseph and Prof. Juliet Stephen. Prof. Daisy Soman, Prof. Mariamma Francis and Dr. Sr. Annette joined the department during the 1960s. Mrs. Geetha, Mrs. Vimala Menon, Mrs. Padma Sankar, Mrs. Clara Simon, Mrs. Jolly Raju, Mrs. Agnes Christy and Mrs. Indu Rajasekhar joined the department later.
We bemoan the untimely demise of Mrs. Geetha, Mrs. Juliet and Mrs. Daisy Soman. May the souls of the dedicated professors rest in peace.
The department encourages its students to actively participate in community activities and tries to utilize its student strength for developmental programmes.

ACHIEVEMENTS
TEACHER ACHIEVEMENTS
- Dr. Sr. Annette Thottakara was awarded the by AIACHE with the Best Principal Award in 1995.
- Prof. Clara M.A. got Kerala University NSS Award for Best Programme Officer thrice.
- Prof. (Capt.) Agnes Rodrigues was selected as the Best Cadet for the pre-commission course held at WOTS, Gwalior in 1992. She represented Kerala in the Republic Day celebrations at New Delhi in 2009.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS - ACADEMIC
- Ms. Suja Chandy has secured the first rank at the B.A Degree examination of the Kerala University held in April 1995.
- Ms. Elsa Joseph has secured the second rank at the B.A Degree examination of the Kerala University held in March 2007.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS - SPORTS
- Ms. Nimmy M.T bagged the Gold Medal in the Junior Asian Rowing Championship held China in 2010.
- Ms. Nimmy M.T also participated in the Youth Olympics held at Singapore in 2010.
- Ms. Thara Kurian won the Bronze Medal in the Junior Asian Rowing Championship in 2009.
- Ms. Ditty Varghese was selected to Junior Asian Rowing Championship.
- Ms. Nimmy M.T, Ms. Thara Kurian, Ms. Ditty Varghese, Ms. Ronymol Joseph, Ms. Reenamol Chacko, Ms. Neethumol G.S, Ms. Monisha K.M, Ms. Bincymol B and Ms. Praseetha P were selected to the Kerala University canoeing, kayaking and rowing teams.
- Ms. Alphonsa Yesudas was crowned the Intercollegiate Chess Champion in 2009. She was also the runner-up in same event in 2010.
- Ms. Neethumol G.S and Ms. Monisha K.M bagged third prize in the Kerala University Cross Country Race in 2010.
ACTIVITIES
The students are motivated to excel in academics and in extra-curricular activities and have reaped rich harvests of laurels over the years. The initiation to these activities begins with the Reading Week celebrations, Fresher's Talent Day and The Welcome Party. The latter creates a friendly atmosphere and establishes a sense of unity. The Department farewells leave a lingering spirit of the family togetherness built up over the years.
Organizing seminars for the students by eminent historians, arranging educational tours to places of historical importance, celebrating days of national and international importance have become regular features. The PTA meet and the Alumni Meet are occasions to interact with the parents and students personally and to promote a healthy exchange of views amongst us. Every year the department organizes exhibitions, intercollegiate elocution and quiz competitions.
To develop social awareness and commitment, many outreach programmes like visit to old-age homes, juvenile homes, Mahila Mandiram, industrial visits, adoption of St. Sebastian's L.P. School on the coastal area, etc. have been undertaken. The students participate enthusiastically in NCC, NSS, Women's Wing programmes, AICUF, etc. Counseling, tutorial system, value-education classes and career-guidance sessions are conducted regularly. Manuscript magazines are published every year.
The faculty has shown keen interests in updating their knowledge by attending regional and national conferences, workshops and refresher courses. Consultancy services are also being provided by the department. As per the college policy of taking students from the economically backward areas, remedial teaching has become necessary and is conducted by the department every year.
The Department Museum has a good collection of stamps, coins, paper-cuttings and models which constitute the source of information for the study. The association has a news-board and the students are encouraged to pin-up articles from newspapers and magazines on topics of current perspective dealing.
ASSOCIATION
Historia, the Association of the students of History, is vibrant acting as a catalytic agent in bringing out the latent talents of our students. It functions with the motto - 'Build the future with action and vision'. With the co-operation and involvement of the teachers, students celebrate all events of historical importance. The students get organizational experience during the Association meetings and various celebrations which encompass a wide spectrum of activities. The Department has undertaken diversified activities to promote intellectual, cultural, aesthetic and social interests of the students through the Association.
